Cannot build on Mac (MonoDevelop 2.6b2)

Olaf Bartelt (AMTANGEE AG)
Whenever I want to build/run a project on my Mac (MonoDevelop 2.6b2 and Mono for Android 1.0), the following error occurs:

Project "/Users/Olaf/Projects/MonoDroidTest/MonoDroidTest/MonoDroidTest.csproj" (Build target(s)):

          Target _GenerateAndroidResourceDir:

Skipping target "_GenerateAndroidResourceDir" because its outputs are up-to-date.

          Target _ResolveMonoAndroidSdks:

/Library/Frameworks/Mono.framework/External/xbuild/Novell/Novell.MonoDroid.Common.targets: error : Error executing task ResolveSdks: Argument cannot be null.

Parameter name: path1

          Task "ResolveSdks" execution -- FAILED

Done building target "_ResolveMonoAndroidSdks" in project "/Users/Olaf/Projects/MonoDroidTest/MonoDroidTest/MonoDroidTest.csproj".-- FAILED

Done building project "/Users/Olaf/Projects/MonoDroidTest/MonoDroidTest/MonoDroidTest.csproj".-- FAILED

Build FAILED.

When I reinstall the last preview version of Mono for Android, everything works fine, as soon as I install the final, it doesn't work anymore. Any ideas to what's causing this? Seems to me that MonoDevelop can't find Mono for Android, since code completion isn't working correctly as well.

Thanks,
Olaf

Re: Cannot build on Mac (MonoDevelop 2.6b2)

Olaf Bartelt (AMTANGEE AG)
Update: after investigating the Novell.MonoDroid.Build.Tasks assembly, I believe the problem is due to there not being a mandroid.exe anymore in the lib directory, but only a mandroid executable (without extension) in the bin directory as of 1.0 (at least on my system) - but then this shouldn't work for anyone out there, or would it?

Update 2: I was right - after copying "mandroid" from the "bin" directory to "lib/mandroid" as "mandroid.exe", everything works fine - so @ Novell: please check the Novell.MonoDroid.Build.Tasks.ResolveSdks method - it seems to be broken/incomplete...

Re: Cannot build on Mac (MonoDevelop 2.6b2)

I don't use my mac much at this point, but this was something I wanted to see work.  I'm going to dig into MonoDevelop for Windows 2.6 beta2 as it has a different, but similar, error message that makes me think there is a similar config issue.

Hello Olaf!

Would you mind pasting the complete list of files under /Developer/MonoAndroid/usr/mandroid/lib ?

Also, did you try by chance the latest addin with 2.6b1 ? Did it used to work?

Thanks!
Carlos.

Awesome, Mono for Android now works on my Mac.  Thanks for the tip!

Thanks,
Olaf

What confuses me is that I don't see this issue, and I don't have a lib/mandroid/mandroid.exe.

The only thing that comes to mind is that Preview 13 (and maybe Preview 14?) was looking for /Developer/MonoAndroid/usr/lib/mandroid/mandroid.exe (which appears to be the case for you), but 1.0 should be looking for /Developer/MonoAndroid/usr/lib/mandroid/Mono.Android.DebugRuntime-debug.apk.

Thus, all I can surmise is that your Novell.MonoDroid.Build.Tasks.dll hasn't been updated for some reason; what is the output you have for:

        $ md5 /Library/Frameworks/Mono.framework/External/xbuild/Novell/Novell.MonoDroid.Build.Tasks.dll
        MD5 (/Library/Frameworks/Mono.framework/External/xbuild/Novell/Novell.MonoDroid.Build.Tasks.dll) = 1795c957d73eb1d92fef0da550c3f0a2

Could you check the MD5SUM of Novell.MonoDroid.Build.Tasks.dll?

Thanks,
 - Jon

Re: Cannot build on Mac (MonoDevelop 2.6b2)

Wally McClure
Jon,

I got the same error as Olaf.  I installed Mono for Android on my new mac sometime around March 20 (preview 14?).  I am currently running 1.0 Mono for Android with the MonoDevelop 2.6b2 on it.  I started getting the error after I went to MD 2.6beta1.  I had things working properly with MD 2.4x.  This was all on my mac.

Further exploration has narrowed it down to a bug in the installer -- it wasn't replacing existing files in /Library/Frameworks/Mono.framework/External.

Consequently any new users would get the proper xbuild support, while anyone upgrading from a previous release would have the xbuild support present in the earlier release.

Oops.

This will be fixed in the next release.

In the meantime, as I can't recall what all changed in the MSBuild support, I would suggest that any OSX developers who upgraded to 1.0 from a prior release perform the following commands within Terminal:

        cd /Library/Frameworks/Mono.framework/External
        sudo unzip -o /Developer/MonoAndroid/usr/share/External.zip

Thanks,
 - Jon
