Consuming a WCF webservice

fdibartolo
Hey guys, got a problem here and looks like I am going in circles.
I am porting a monotouch app (already in production) to monodroid, which consumes an api based on a set of wcf web services.

What I did is just took the c# proxy class from my iphone app and add it to a blank monodroid project to start playing around. Bottomline is that I cannot establish connection to the webservice.

In the activity OnCreate method, I set up my proxy settings and event handlers.
When I tap on a button, I fire the async call to the webservice, and that is where my app does nothing (I am not making it to the ws callback method).
If I am debugging, it just says no assembly symbols info.
Weird thing (for me), is that if I am not debugging, the app will not crash, but will navigate to the previous activity... That activity is the main one, so the app might be restarting, but I just don't see that it closes and opens again, it just "navigates back" to it.

I don't see any input within the Debug Log.
I try to use fiddler, in order to see if I am actually seeing http traffic, but nothing shows up (the webservices are sitting remotely, not on my pc).
I do have internet connection on the emulator, as I can navigate web sites.
I did read that the manifest is automatically generated, so I was guessing it might be a permission problem, but I see in the manifest that it is actually set: "<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" />"

Anyway, keep trying different options, but any guidance is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

PD: one thing that caught my eye, is that within the project, I don't see an option to add a "service reference", but only "web reference", in order to consume old asmx web services, and not wcf...

Re: Consuming a WCF webservice

I tried to use a WCF proxy too and it didn't work for me either. I can communicate with a webservice, but got a weird issue with the GetProperty<T> method on the binding. (I filed a bugreport for this, should be fixed in the next official release I believe).
Also sometimes the async calls don't come back. The same goes for web references though.

I get the feeling something isn't quite ready yet in the webservices department.

Re: Consuming a WCF webservice

Expected as much :)
Crossing fingers it will be improved in a future release of mono/mono-android.
The System.WebServices stack works, but it's quite old and I would very much like to be able to use WCF instead.

Re: Consuming a WCF webservice

Philip Kuhn
HI guys. I got accessing a WCF Service working. It was a few releases back so I'm not sure wots changed since then, but the trick was accessing the service on 10.0.2.2 rather than localhost or any other url. It has something to do with the firewall on the debugger needing to go through that port to hit anything outside of itself. I think you may also need to host it in IIS. So if your service us called service1.svc hosted in the virtual directory AndroidService, you'll access it on http://10.0.2.2/AndroidService/service1.svc

Hope that helps.

Haha, I was getting confused a bit, because that bug was fixed by you ;)
One question on the GetProperty<T> issue. Is the fix for this already available as part of mono-android?

Hehe, sorry for the confusion.
I don't think MfA team had released newer versions than my fix in git
master. It should be included in the next release.
